Web Development: Search Engine Knowledge

Home

Search Engines are complicated mathematical formulas designed to match character strings within bodies of text and to then return results based on the number (quantity) of times the match was found.

There are two simple ways to increase your hit probablity without spending a lot of money on search engine submissions or optimizations.

1. I found this Q&A on the Google site, and I think it applies to most search engine sites.

According to Google...

Q: How do I get my site listed on Google?

A: The best way to ensure Google finds your site is for your page to be linked from lots of pages on other sites.

Google's robots jump from page to page on the Web via hyperlinks, so the more sites that link to you, the more likely it is that we'll find you quickly.

2. Content, Content, Content

On the web, what you WRITE is what you are, search engine speaking. It is within the words where search engines find what they are looking for, as in those matching character strings.

Again, the complicated formulas behind search engines work as fast as the speed of light to find what URL or even specific page within a site has the most number of matching character strings.

My suggestion is to repeat content within your site that is specific and important to your site. Insignificant words like "in, on, and, the, etc." do not count. Find a specific phrase, like "acrobatic instructor" or "engine repair cheap" that really describe what you are offering through your site and use those words in your site as much as possible.
